About Idaho CDL Training
Built by drivers. Focused on people.
Idaho CDL Training was created to solve a problem we kept seeing in the industry: people who needed a CDL but didn’t have a realistic way to get the training they needed.
Most programs required students to take weeks off work for long classroom schedules, while others were left trying to learn on their own with borrowed equipment and little guidance.
We built a different approach — one focused on real-world training, smaller student groups, and helping each person gain the confidence they need behind the wheel.
Because getting your CDL shouldn’t feel impossible.
About Idaho CDL Training
Our Story
Before federal ELDT training requirements were introduced, many people preparing for their CDL had only two options — enroll in a long, full-time program or try to learn on their own with a borrowed truck. We saw countless people show up for their CDL skills test unprepared, not because they didn’t care, but because they didn’t have a practical path to quality training.
At the time, Harry was working as a third-party CDL skills tester and saw this challenge firsthand. People were eager to work, eager to learn, and eager to build better careers — they just needed the right kind of training.
So we built a program designed around the real needs of students and employers.
Over time, we began partnering with companies across industries like utilities, construction, municipalities, waste management, and transportation to name a few. These employers weren’t just looking for licensed drivers — they were looking for dependable people who had the confidence and skills to do the job safely.
By working closely with employers and students, we’ve been able to refine our programs and create training that prepares drivers for the real world, not just the test.
Today, our mission remains the same: help people gain the skills, confidence, and opportunity that come with earning a CDL.
Why Students Choose Idaho CDL Training
Personalized Training
We keep our student-to-instructor ratios low so students spend more time learning and less time waiting for their turn. Our goal is simple — help every student leave confident behind the wheel.
Experienced Instructors Who Care
Our instructors are experienced drivers who are passionate about helping students succeed. Patience, encouragement, and real-world knowledge are at the heart of every training session.
Industry-Focused Programs
A CDL is used in far more industries than just over-the-road trucking. We work with utilities, municipalities, construction companies, and many other employers to ensure training matches real job needs.
Support From Start to Finish
From the first phone call to navigating DMV paperwork, scheduling tests, and answering questions along the way, our team works hard to guide students through every step of the process.
Family-Owned and Operated
As a family business, we believe in treating students with respect, honesty, and integrity. Every decision we make is centered around creating the best possible experience for the people who trust us with their training.
Focused on Real Confidence
Passing the CDL test is important, but confidence and safety matter even more. Our programs are designed to help students leave feeling capable, prepared, and ready for the road ahead.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: help people succeed.
At Idaho CDL Training, we believe that earning a CDL can open the door to life-changing opportunities. Whether someone is starting a new career, advancing in their current industry, or creating better opportunities for their family, we take that responsibility seriously. We focus on delivering quality training that builds confidence, safety, and real-world skill. That means taking the time to understand each student’s goals and helping them choose the training path that makes the most sense for them.
As our company continues to grow, that mission continues to expand. Outside of Idaho, our programs operate under the name Impact CDL Training, reflecting our commitment to creating a lasting impact in the lives of the students and companies we serve.
None of this would be possible without the incredible team of instructors and staff who share that mission and work every day to support our students.
The Impact Behind the Training
More Than Just a License
Over the years, we’ve met students from every walk of life. Some are looking to advance in their current career. Others are starting completely over.
A few of the stories that stay with us the most are the ones where someone comes through our program during one of the hardest seasons of their life. We’ve had students who were struggling just to get back on their feet, some who didn’t even have a stable place to live when they first walked through our doors.
Watching someone push through that challenge, earn their CDL, and then call us weeks later after landing their first good-paying job is something we will never take for granted.
Hearing the pride and excitement in their voice when they realize they can finally support themselves and build a stable future is incredibly meaningful to us. Those moments remind us why we do what we do.
Helping someone gain the confidence and opportunity to become self-reliant is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.
About Our Founder
Harry Packwood brings decades of experience in commercial driving, safety leadership, and public service to Idaho CDL Training.
Harry began his career working on a family farm in Idaho hauling potatoes, where he developed a strong work ethic and an early respect for the industries that keep our communities running. Over the years, he built more than two decades of experience operating commercial vehicles in demanding environments, including the oil fields of North Dakota, Wyoming, and surrounding states, as well as on Alaska’s North Slope.
During his time in the oil fields, Harry also worked in safety roles, helping ensure crews operated equipment responsibly and returned home safely at the end of each shift. That experience reinforced a principle that continues to guide Idaho CDL Training today: safety and preparation matter far more than simply passing a test.
In addition to his industry experience, Harry served over 9 years as an Idaho law enforcement officer and earned his intermediate certification through the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement from the College of Southern Idaho and is a POST-certified DUI instructor. Harry continues to serve the community today as a volunteer reserve officer.
Through Idaho CDL Training, Harry and the team are committed to helping the next generation of drivers gain the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to succeed in the industries that rely on safe and capable commercial drivers.
