Class A B CDL School

Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Training must follow federal rules.

Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT)

CDL training through a registered provider is federally mandated (in effect since Feb. 7, 2022). This is why NLC students must complete ELDT requirements for Theory and Behind-the-Wheel. Our team helps you stay compliant and prepared.

ELDT Theory Course

Best completed before term.

ELDT Theory Course

Complete the ELDT Class A Theory course through CDLonline.com. This course satisfies the federal ELDT theory requirement and also acts as a study guide for your written permit testing. Starting early helps you arrive on campus ready to train.

Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

Your CLP comes first.

Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP)

Before training begins, students must obtain a Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with air brakes through the DMV/DPS (agency name varies by state). Expected/Recommended to obtain the CLP before the term starts, when possible.
Corporate and fleet training school

18–20 Years Old

Extra steps may apply.

18–20 Years Old

You can still earn your Class A CDL, but your process may require additional steps depending on your home state and where you plan to train/test. What to expect: You may need to switch your driver’s license and permit to the state where you are training/testing. State rules can limit whether you can test using an out-of-state permit. If you are coming from out of state, contact your campus coordinator early so you arrive prepared.
CDL Test Training

21+ Years Old

Most processes are simpler.

21+ Years Old

Most students 21+ can complete the permit process in their home state and still train at their NLC campus. What to expect: You may be able to train using an out-of-state permit (depending on the campus/state). If you want to test in the state where you train, you may need to switch your license and permit.
Online ELDT Training

From WA or CA

State rules are different.

From WA or CA

Washington and California have additional state-mandated CDL training requirements that go beyond federal ELDT. What to expect: Students from WA or CA may be required to switch their license and permit to the state where they plan to train and test. This applies in many cases, regardless of age, due to state training hour requirements. Contact your campus coordinator before scheduling permit testing so you follow the correct steps.
